Use the Skills Level table below to determine what level you or your child swims at currently. The Skills Needed for Class are the skills that the class participant should have for a certain class. If in doubt, we suggest you choose a lower level. The Goals for Class are the goals that Coach Sally strives for in a class for that level of student. In classes, some students may move forward 1 to 2, or more, skill levels in a single week. All skills listed in table are skills without any flotation device assistance.

Performs front float with assistance.
Comfortable lying on back and putting ears in the water.
|Level 3||Will submerge head in the water and hold breath for a minimum of 10 seconds.
Will perform a front float without assistance.
Comfortable under water and retrieving items from bottom of pool.
|Swim independently more than 5 feet on top of water.
Performs back float with assistance.
Will go under water and push off bottom with assistance.
Takes a breath when surfacing, repeating 5 times consecutively (bobs).

Performs back float with assistance.
With assistance, will put head under water and push off bottom, taking a breath when surfacing, repeating 5 times consecutively.

|Turns over from front to back float.
Floats on back for 10 seconds.
Swims independently on front, 20-30 feet with coordination of arms/leg (Freestyle stroke), taking breaths appropriately.
Swims on back for 10 feet.
Jumps into deep water, comes to surface, then swims to side of pool.
Treads water for 10 seconds.
|Level 6||Swims independently 30 feet with coordination of arm stroke and flutter kick (freestyle stroke) on front while taking breaths appropriately.
Swims on back independently a minimum of 10 feet.
Jumps into deep water from side of pool, surfaces, and swims back to side of pool.
Treads water for 15 seconds.
|Swims 60 feet performing freestyle stroke.
Develops freestyle stroke coordination with breathing to side.
Jumps off diving board and swims to side of pool.
Treads water for 30 seconds.
Performs backstroke with coordinated arms and legs.

Will perform a head-first entry into pool or dive into water from side of pool.
